Initial public release

BakBeat 1.0.0

BakBeat 1.0 is the first public release of a modern music library built specifically to bring MiniDisc into the present. Import your music, organize a permanent library, and write music to supported NetMD recorders without relying on abandoned software from decades past.

Version 1.0.0
Platform Apple Silicon Mac
Requires macOS 14.4 or later
Installer BakBeat-1.0.0.dmg

Why BakBeat Exists

MiniDisc users have spent years depending on discontinued software like SonicStage to keep their recorders alive. BakBeat was created to provide a modern, native macOS alternative that respects your existing music library instead of locking it away.

BakBeat stores your library in a durable BakBeat.bbl package while leaving your music under your control. Import from existing folders, external drives, NAS storage, or other collections, then use that library as the foundation for supported portable devices.

No SonicStage required. BakBeat writes directly to supported NetMD devices from your own music library.

Highlights In 1.0.0

⭐ Modern MiniDisc Support

Write music in SP, LP2, and LP4 to validated NetMD hardware, browse discs, edit titles, reorder tracks, erase tracks, and manage your MiniDisc collection from a native macOS application.

Library Management

Create or open a BakBeat library, import existing music collections, browse artists, albums, playlists, and tracks, and preserve a permanent catalog of your collection.

Artwork & Metadata

Read common music metadata, extract embedded artwork, prefer folder artwork when available, and keep rebuildable cache data separate from your library.

Validated Device Support

Support in 1.0 is intentionally focused on a small number of thoroughly tested devices rather than broad compatibility claims.

Safe Device Operations

Every write is previewed before execution so you know exactly what BakBeat intends to change before your device is modified.

Your Files Stay Yours

BakBeat works with your existing folders and storage locations instead of hiding your collection inside a proprietary cloud library.

Validated Hardware

BakBeat 1.0 focuses on a small number of devices that have been validated on real hardware.

Installation

  1. Download BakBeat-1.0.0.dmg.
  2. Open the disk image.

  5. Choose an existing BakBeat library or create a new one during setup.

A Note From The Developer

BakBeat is the beginning of a long-term preservation project for dedicated music players. Version 1.0 intentionally focuses on doing a small number of things well instead of claiming support for every device.

If you still use MiniDisc, classic iPods, Walkman players, or other dedicated music hardware, thank you for trying the very first public release. Your feedback will directly shape where BakBeat goes next.

Notes For This First Release

BakBeat is direct-distributed Mac software. It is built for Apple Silicon Macs and modern macOS, with the filesystem as a core part of the product instead of something hidden behind a sandboxed document model.

For 1.0.0, the best experience is to start with a known music folder, a known BakBeat library location, and one supported device at a time. If something looks wrong, stop before confirming destructive device actions and email support with the device model, macOS version, and what BakBeat reported.
